Apple’s extended customer support is amazing. Once I initiated the return request, I received a box within 2 days. I packed up my computer, and took it to a DHL counter, and I received notice the following day(!) that Apple had received, repaired, and shipped it. I got it back within 2 business days, and noticed they had replaced my LCD, hard drive, a memory module, and a bunch of other internal components, including a fan. I wish they would have also replaced the battery, which is slowly losing steam. Eh. I didn’t have to spend a coin on getting my computer repaired (other than the initial $200 something I spent on the extended AppleCare warranty), so I’m not complaining.
Unfortunately, I still have to reinstall the software that didn’t come bundled with the default installation.

Yes, it’s true. The hard drive in my Apple Powerbook G4 died over the weekend. I managed to get my important data off it before it crashed for good, but I had to hold it at a bizarre angle to get the hard drive to spin up properly. Very strange. After spending an hour on the phone with Tera at Apple’s tech support, we agreed it needed to be sent in. Fortunately, I had purchased an extended Applecare warranty, and I was still covered. They’re going to repair it for free.
Regarding the extended warrany: it’s definitely a good idea to get a warranty, even if you think nothing could ever happen. Hard drives fail all the time. How could they not? They are essentially a bunch of stacked magnetic plates, spinning around at high velocities. Even the slightest deviance could cause the whole thing to fail. Eventually, solid state drives will replace these magnetic monstrosities…

Weather.com says Milwaukee is currently at 18°F, but feels Like 5°F. I was walking to class and the wind chill was dreadful. While I like a lot of things about Milwaukee, winter is not one of them.

I now have about 8 students signed up, and I’m really enjoying teaching. To share my passion is very fulfilling, and it doesn’t feel like work. At this point, I don’t have enough students to justify quitting my day job. If this keeps up, however, there will come a point at which I will have to make a tough decision.

Roman joins the UrbanItes on guitar, at the Bob Marley Festival:
Urban Empress and the Urbanites open for Aswah Greggori and the Enforcers.
9pm $12 advance/$15 door
Off stage, Aswah is a man of few words – always humble, usually humorous, very subtle. His personal story is as inspiring as his lyrics and music. Born in Louisiana in 1946, Aswah came to Chicago after his Viet Nam experience to find work “somewhere other than the lumber mills” of Louisiana. In 1971, a serious industrial accident which severed his right arm also changed his life forever. After surviving not only the accident but the grueling arm re-attachment surgeries and therapy which followed, Aswah emerged with a new sense of purpose leading him into a full-time music career. Spiritually guided and unencumbered by traditional definitions of success (“Material possessions won’t save you, only bring aggression, enslave you” he sings in “Save You From Yourself”), Aswah’s message is man’s healing from violence, drugs, hatred and jealousy the music is his medium.
