Squirrel Crossing

I beheld a strange sight today. Squirrels usually pick the most random locations along a road to cross, and often with dire consequences. I’ve witnessed many a squirrel meeting the wheels of a passing Cadillac with a crunch.

Not today, however. With my own eyes I beheld a squirrel using the crosswalk. I was approaching a stop sign, and a squirrel walked onto the road as I drove up. He was watching me carefully, and tenaciously made his way across the road. When he got to the other side, he looked at me as if to say, “Didn’t I do a great job?”

I said, “Good job,” and drove home, thinking how great it would be if all squirrels could cross like that. It totally breaks my heart to see animals run over.

I brake for squirrels at least three times a week. I have yet to run one over. I think their mortality rate would lesson significantly if people would take more notice of squirrels.

I once witnessed a squirrel getting partially run over. I think it had a damaged leg or broken back or something, but it was still alive. The driver who had done it knew that he had hit a squirrel, and was driving real slow as if to decide the best course of action. Personally, I felt compelled to drive back and run over the squirrel properly to put it out of its misery, but I was already late to work. The weight of my aborted responsibility was heavy on my conscience all day, and I checked to see if the squirrel was there on my way home. It was, and very much resembled a pancake, so I figure the original driver must have returned and finished off the poor thing.
