I once witnessed a squirrel getting partially run over. I think it had a damaged leg or broken back or something, but it was still alive. The driver who had done it knew that he had hit a squirrel, and was driving real slow as if to decide the best course of action. Personally, I felt compelled to drive back and run over the squirrel properly to put it out of its misery, but I was already late to work. The weight of my aborted responsibility was heavy on my conscience all day, and I checked to see if the squirrel was there on my way home. It was, and very much resembled a pancake, so I figure the original driver must have returned and finished off the poor thing.

I brake for squirrels at least three times a week. I have yet to run one over. I think their mortality rate would lesson significantly if people would take more notice of squirrels.
